Minimum down payment percentages:

0%* = VA, CHFA & USDA financing (* Qualifying requirements apply)
3.5% = FHA financing
5 - 10% = Conventional financing

A good rule of thumb is to have a maximum Debt to Income (DTI) percentage of 35%. Ideally, your total monthly debt should not exceed 35% of your monthly income. This principal is used by lenders during the pre-qualification process to estimate a potential home buyer’s monthly payment, then extrapolate it over an amortized loan period at current interest rates, which calculates the home buyer’s total allowable mortgage amount.
